i've not usually perplexed. actually, i can't remember ever having been perplexed at all. that's probably a lie, but is not in the least bit relevant to the issue at hand anyway.
apart from being convenient for HMV workers, is there room left for meaningful, discriminating genres in music today? i heard someone on the weekend say that they don't like the whole nu-rock thing. i don't really get what the whole nu-rock thing is. but i pretend to cause NME say it's happeneing. and y'know about NME.
i tend to think of music as noise. you like some noise, you don't like other noise. so two rekurds might be categorised as hip hop, but one might end up being some west coast RnB number, and the other might be something a bit more DJ Krush.
music is so cross-polinated these days that some acts are immune to genrefication. like simian, gorillaz, the datsuns. ok, maybe not the datsuns.
so - are genres meaningful, or just convenient? do you play in a rock band? or in a post punk new wave NYC garage outfit? what genre do the modge grrls classify themselves as.
sorry if this post has elements that are rendered incomprehensible. i'm sketchy today.

hmmm jspace... thats a tricky one.... (and yes some of that was incomprehensible) how do you classify genres these days? you can't really. Us modge chicks have had numerous discussions on what genre we fall into. I used to say girl-rock, but I don't think that really covers it. I am now opting for melodic rock/indie pop if there is such a thing. Just don't ask me to explain it to you.
