There was a really good article in The Age where she was interviewed and explained why she did what she did. If I recall correctly, i summary, in times where the world was in major upheavel, there was still more-uplifting music around that was there to help people forget about the bad times. Cole Porter and World War II got mentioned somewhere in the article and that's what she was trying to do.
BTW, I think "Spirit" was her weakest album. It's just too polished singer-songwriter. It's good that she does something new with each album and progresses somewhere.
